Because EVERYONE deserves to be healthy

About Us

The Why

Did you know...

  • Studies in the UK and the US suggest that individuals with an intellectual disability have an average life expectancy 16-20 years shorter than the general population. (1)

  • Obesity estimates for adults with disabilities range from 25% to 31% compared to 15%–19% for adults without disabilities. (2)

  • According to Lending Tree, the average cost of raising a neurotypical child from birth until the age of 18 is $237,482; a UGA study estimates that the cost of raising a child with ID/DD can reach $2.5 million, more than 10x their neurotypical peers! (3)

Because of this, general health and wellness services often take a back seat to core medical care and therapeutic services.

The How

At The Breakthrough Fund, we are committed to supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID/DD) by providing access to essential health and wellness services. We understand that these individuals and their families often face significant financial challenges when seeking care and support. Many resources are available, but access to them can be difficult, and the waiting lists can be long.

That’s where The Breakthrough Fund comes in!

Through the generosity of our donors, we raise money to directly support ID/DD individuals access to health and wellness services. These programs help meet critical needs that are often unmet. Together, we can fill the gaps and make a lasting impact on the lives of individuals with ID/DD, to live longer, healthier lives.

History

The Breakthrough Fund was founded in 2023 by Jake Allyne and Steve Goodman. Through their work at Breakthrough Fit Co, they met many families who understood the critical importance of good health and physical exercise for their ID/DD loved ones, but were financially constrained. These families were paying out of pocket for core services, unaware that they may qualify for government assistance programs. Once directed to these programs, the reality is that the application process and funding can take years before being approved. This sparked the idea of creating The Breakthrough Fund, a nonprofit that acts as a funding bridge: covering expenses for health and wellness services that families could not otherwise afford.
